Taylor Swift went IN on Scooter Braun after he signed a deal acquiring her old record label and holding the rights to her entire musical catalog, so get the popcorn ready, y’all.
What’s up guys, it’s SINEAD DEVRIES back here on Clevver news… and you thought you’d have a lazy, quiet Sunday, didn’t you? WELP, in comes Taylor Swift to stir things up as it seems all of our social media channels unanimously just blew up. So if you were actually out and about and somehow missed the hot gossip, here’s what went down.
Over the weekend, Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings LLC agreed to acquire Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group (which was Taylor’s old record label throughout her entire career).
Although terms of the agreement were not disclosed, a source told Billboard the deal topped $300 million and also includes the music publishing operation, Big Machine Music.
The deal was put in place to create another independent music company powerhouse with multiple capabilities and income streams through the record label operations and School Boy Records, the recently acquired Atlas Music Publishing and now Big Machine Music. Scooter will be working closely with Scott Borchetta, AKA the head honcho of Big Machine, so together, the two are sitting on more money and opportunities I even have the brain capacity to fully understand.
So then Taylor gets words of this… and might I remind you, that as an unapologetic superstar that hasn’t been one to shy away from using her platform to speak her mind in recent months, naturally, she didn’t skip a beat in addressing this instance.
Are you keeping up? Good, because this is where all the -ISH went down!
She kicked things off by posting a screenshot to her Instagram stories of a photo Justin Bieber had posted a while back, with Scooter Braun and Kanye West, writing, “Taylor Swift what up”. She wrote on the photo QUOTE, “This is Scooter Braun, bullying me on social media when I was at my lowest point. He’s about to own all the music I’ve ever made.”
Taylor went on to claim that she had just learned about Scooter’s purchase of her music as it was just announced to the world, and proceeded to call him a “bully” for doing so.
To make matters worse (and to reopen the wounds that we all thought we had healed from), Taylor even addressed a few other well-known instances she was being “bullied”, adding, “…Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo).
Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy.”
Tay dubbed this entire situation as QUOTE, “my worst case scenario” and also went on to slam Scott Borchetta, whom she’d put her trust in for years, saying, “This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.”
Is anyone else hot in here, or is it just me…?
Although many celebs have weighed in on both sides of the debacle, Justin Bieber, AKA Scooter’s protege, publicly reached out to clarify what had happened in a rather mature and non-combative post. He wrote, “Hey Taylor. First of all I would like to apologize for posting that hurtful instagram post, at the time I thought it was funny but looking back it was distasteful and insensitive…”
But right now, I wanna turn it over to you guys — does Taylor have a right to be mad or are you siding with Justin and Scooter on this one? Get to talking in the comments below. Once you comment, go ahead and hit that subscribe button and the bell so you never miss a video!
